There might not be much to gain from copying other companies D2R Items," Asano told 4gamer.Fortunately, that cost isn't stopping Square Enix from releasing more games with this design.
A remake of Live a Live is set to release exclusively on Nintendo Switch in July, and a remake of Dragon Quest III is currently in development. There are many other games that could benefit from this style, as well. It will certainly be interesting to learn exactly what Square Enix does with HD-2D in the future. While the company has certainly committed to this style of graphic, Asano went on to clarify that there is no any current "definitive Bible," and it will continue to change according to the game.
"We haven't come up with anything like this. The way it's told is different with each film, and the HD-2D-style will differ slightly each time. With Live A Live for example it's the atmosphere in the prehistoric area is likely to be different to the sci-fi setting. The range of expressions we can use has grown due to the latest concepts we've developed. "While the cost may be prohibitive for some designers, HD-2D has certainly been a major selling point for a lot of gamers. We hope to observe Square Enix find new ways to further develop the design to make more games to be made!
